Fat Lady, Please Sing ...

Next Tuesday is election day, and not a moment too soon.

Between a TV ad blitz and daily phone calls from every special interest group on the planet, I don't think I can tolerate much more of this.

The negative TV ads have moved to a whole new dimension. The vilified candidate is just a step above Satan, somewhere between a child molester and a mass murderer, while the candidate who has "approved this ad" is one step away from sainthood. OK, so that's exaggerating, but only a little bit.

The stupidest line -- so stupid that they might have borrowed it from reality TV -- is when the ad says the person voted with their party 99% of the time.

Why is that dumb? Well, let's think about it.

Don't you think a Democrat or Republican is expected to vote with their party nearly all of the time? That's why they won the election. A Democrat is elected because they're a Democrat, not a Republican. If you're a Democrat who doesn't toe the party line, then you're not much of a Democrat.

You might as well be Sen. Joe Lieberman of Connecticut -- a man who dared challenge the party. And you know what happened to him: Joe lost the primary and was shunned and attacked by his own party and now is running as an independent. Even so, Joe might have the last laugh. We'll know in a few days (Update: Joe won). He was a good Joe, so that's OK. Does anyone use that phrase anymore?

But I'm sick of the constant phone calls, the television ads that expect you to be a blithering idiot and the numerous signs littering the landscape. Oh, let's not get into that.
