Johnny Rolando
WHEN I got to Germany in 1979, the whole atmosphere was very different from what I had experienced in Maine. I was working days now, so I had to take back all of the things I'd said about day-flight guys. Guardmount was surreal – there was a total lack of respect for authority. Guys would sneak in late through the back door, and Washington, the shift sergeant either didn't know or didn't want to know. Johnny Rolando was usually the latest of the late, and he would wear his sunglasses to guardmount. Washington would call out his name, and Johnny would mumble something in reply. Washington would announce Johnny's post assignment, and – no matter what the assignment was –  Johnny would say something like, "That sonofa__, he can go __ himself." And we'd all start laughing like it was the funniest thing we'd ever heard. Rollei 35T, Ektachrome.
